China's military has stressed a ban on its personnel joining overseas NGOs due to "political sensitivity."

Servicemen and women are barred from joining NGOs unless on military assignment, emphasized a report in Monday's PLA Daily, quoting a People's Liberation Army (PLA) source from a leading group in charge of personnel education.

"As the military must be highly unified and united, servicemen entering such overseas organizations may be politically sensitive and thus require strict scrutiny before approval," said the source.

Violations of this rule must be strictly dealt with, according to the report.

The PLA last month ordered a crackdown on military personnel organizing or taking part in improper social organizations.

"The special nature of the military calls for strict management of its members' participation in such groups," the PLA Daily report said, calling for unregistered groups or organizations established by individuals within the military to be disbanded.
