Senior CPC official attends events marking founding anniversary of Korean Workers' Party

A visiting senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), together with leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Saturday attended events marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK).

Liu Yunshan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, joined leaders of the DPRK led by WPK First Secretary Kim Jong Un and some 100,000 Pyongyang residents in watching military and civilian parades on the Kim II Sung Square in the heart of Pyongyang.

Kim and Liu later attended a youth parade held at the square together.

On Saturday morning, Liu met with Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, to exchange views on inheriting and carrying forward the China-DPRK traditional friendship and developing friendly relations between the two parties and the two countries.

During his stay, Liu paid a visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun and respectfully presented floral baskets to the statues of late top DPRK leaders Kim II Sung and Kim Jong II.

Liu also visited the Memorial Museum of the Victory of Fatherland Liberation War in Pyongyang and the exhibition hall of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) who fell in actions in the 1950-1953 Korean War, heartfeltly recalling the glorious history 65 years ago when the CPVs fought side by side with the DPRK army and people, and gained victory after overcoming great hardships.

On Sunday morning, Liu visited a cemetery for martyrs of the CPV soldiers in Anju, and venerably presented a floral basket and stood in silent tribute for CPV soldiers who fell in actions. He looked at the wall of honor with reverence, and carefully inspected newly repaired facilities including the tomb area, the monument and the memorial square.

Liu delivered a speech at the event and, on behalf of the CPC, the Chinese government, the Chinese people and CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, mourned with deep grief the deaths of the CPV soldiers, conveyed warm greetings to all veterans and family members of CPV soliders who are still alive, and expressed sincere thanks to related departments, organizations and people from various fields that cared about, supported and participated in the renovation of the cemetery.

Attending the event were about 200 people including accompanying Chinese officials, staff members of the Chinese embassy in the DPRK, personnel from relevant Chinese organizations and representative of Chinese who work or study in the DPRK.

The cemetery in Anju houses the remains of 1,156 CPV soldiers. Starting from 2011, China and DPRK have been making joint efforts to renovate such commemoration facilities for CPV soldiers who fell in actions.

On Sunday afternoon, Liu visited a corn processing plant in Pyongyang, and watched an cultural and artistic performance celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the WPK.

Wang Jiarui, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, also attended the events.
