An alleged mentally ill person stabbed three family members to death in central China's Hunan Province on Saturday, local authorities said Sunday.
The 33-year-old man, surnamed Long, killed his parents and his niece with a knife, according to the public security bureau of Liling City. Long, who later jumped off a building, and his another niece were among the injured.
Police said Long had a history of mental illness but further checks were needed to confirm his mental condition at the time of the attack.
China has seen a spate of fatal attacks by the mentally ill in recent years.
In May, a man suspected to have mental illness stormed into a restaurant in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, killing one child and injuring seven others with a kitchen knife.
China had more than 100 million people with some forms of mental disorder in 2009, including 16 million with severe mental illnesses, according to the latest figures available from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
