Featuring exhibits from 36 galleries and more than 20 art institutions, the Art Shenzhen 2015 art expo opened to the public on Thursday.

After previous events in 2013 and 2014, the expo's organizers have increased emphasis on making the event an art expo for the general public. Exhibiting works from big names in Chinese contemporary art such as Zeng Fanzhi, Wang Guangyi, Fang Lijun and Zhou Chunya, Art Shenzhen will also host seminars, art forums as well as public lectures.

This year Art Shenzhen is introducing the New Media Art Space exhibition, which showcases all types of new mediums, from audio and video installations to digital art.

As part of the organizers' continued support of promising young art talents, the expo is also providing exhibition space and recommending artists to art galleries through its annual Support Young Artist Growth project.

Unlike past expos which took place at the end of the year, organizers decided to hold this year's event in September. According to Li Jingyun, executive director of Art Shenzhen, the long-term goal for Art Shenzhen is to become a parallel exhibition to the Hong Kong Art Basel. The expo will run until September 20.
