The government should push forward with afforestation, Vice Premier Wang Yang said on Tuesday.

Wang was speaking during an inspection tour at an exhibition on green industry in Tianjin City, north China. He said more tree should be planted, and the public should be made more aware of environmental issues to truly develop the green economy.

Wang urged that more attention to be given to natural forests and called for more participation by individuals and companies.

Policymakers have put much focus on the environment, and rolled out measures to control pollution in a bid to steer the economy on to a sustainable path.

The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Friday passed a reform program on ecological progress, noting that economic development and environmental protection should be coordinated.
