Chinese long jumper Wang Jia'nan -became the first male Asian to claim a medal in the event at the World -Championships after placing third at Beijing's Bird's Nest on Tuesday.

Wang, who placed fourth in -Monday's qualifying round with a distance of 8.12 meters, jumped a personal best of 8.18 meters in the final.

The young athlete, who turns 19 on Thursday, beat his two -compatriots on Tuesday night.

Gao Xinglong and Li Jinzhe finished fourth and fifth who jumped 8.14 and 8.10 meters, -respectively.

Despite his achievement, Wang said he's not satisfied with his performance.

In his last attempt, he had hoped to surpass second-ranked Lapierre Fabrice of France, but a mistake led to a jump of only 6.27 meters.

He said he believes he can do better in the future.

"I've been hampered by injury this year, and haven't trained well, so my performance tonight was not so good," Wang told a post-event news

conference. "If I can keep healthy next year and train harder, I believe I can jump better."

Li, the Chinese record holder who jumped a personal best of 8.47 meters in 2014, was not at his best form on Tuesday. He only jumped 8.10 meters.

The 2014 Asian Games champion jumped a mere 7.69 meters in his first attempt.

"I don't know why I made that mistake in my first jump, I've never encountered this kind of situation in my career," Li told reporters.

Li didn't blame his body condition for the mistake, but confessed he was bothered by his first jump. After a failed -second attempt, "I felt half-paralyzed."

He improved with a distance of 8.09 meters in his third attempt.

"That made me full of hope again, but I was too tired and failed to do well enough."

He reached 8.10 meters in the fifth -attempt, but his fourth and sixth tries were nullified.

"I always believe that I have a chance here, but I failed. Perhaps it's destiny that the medal didn't go to me," Li said.

Although failing to make it to the podium, Gao said he's happy with his fourth-place finish in his first major competition.

Greg Rutherford of Great Britain won gold with a jump of 8.41 meters, winning the event at the Olympics, Commonwealth and European Games.

Besides the three male long jumpers, two Chinese athletes competed on Tuesday night.

Chinese discus thrower Su Xinyue finished eighth in the women's final with a best of 62.90 meters.

Craft Shanice of Germany won gold with a throw of 65.88 meters.

Chinese runner Xie Zhenye finished third in his men's 200-meter heat, but was disqualified due to a foul.
