A team of 10 Chinese playwrights on Monday donated motorbikes and other gear to Kenyan conservancies that are to be used in the fight against poaching.

"The donation of anti-poaching equipment by Chinese nationals has injected fresh impetus in wildlife protection," said Judi Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources when presiding over the handover ceremony of the donations in the capital Nairobi.

The Chinese playwrights, who were on a visit to Kenya on wildlife conservation, have joined a growing list of Chinese animal lovers involved in wildlife protection.

The gear they donated will be used by several conservancies in Kenya's wildlife-rich Masai Mara region.

Wakhungu said the motorcycles would boost surveillance in the wildlife sanctuaries that have been targeted by poachers armed with sophisticated weapons.

"The new donations will improve the capacity of rangers to detect and respond promptly to poaching," she said.

China has consistently offered technical and material support to Kenya in combating wildlife crime, and the two sides have enhanced related cooperation, the official said.

"We have strengthened cooperation with China to combat illegal wildlife trade from both the supply and demand side. This cooperation has brighter prospects," she said.
