Beijing's first customizable housing renovation project for disabled persons officially started on Thursday, and it's estimated that about 12,000 houses will be renovated by the end of this year, Beijing Daily reported.

According to Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation, people can apply for this renovation program at their neighborhood committees. After their application is approved, they can choose from up to 30 different kinds of free-of-charge renovation projects, according to their home's condition and their own requirements.

Remote control lighting is one of the most popular projects among the applicants. Other popular projects include the installation of a device that helps people move between a wheelchair and a bed, and a multi-functional nursing bed.
