A man committed suicide after murdering five members of a family in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Wednesday night, according to local authorities.
Police found the body of the suspect, a 43-year-old surnamed Zhang, at around 10 a.m. on Thursday in a cellar in his house in Xunyang County's Wafangpo Village.
The victims, also from the Wafangpo, included a couple, their two young grandchildren and the couple's daughter-in-law, said the local information office in a statement.
Four of the five victims were pronounced dead in the village at about 9 p.m. and the fifth died later in hospital.
Police said Zhang died after taking poison. They are investigating the motivation of his murder.
