Residents of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region are celebrating Naadam, the traditional games festival known as the world's second-oldest Olympics.

The 26th Inner Mongolian Tourism Naadam began in Siziwang Banner (or county), in the city of Ulanqab on Saturday. A range of Mongolian sports contests have been organized at the Gegentala Grassland, the tourism fair's venue.

The event has attracted about 60,000 visitors and herdsmen from all over the region to take part in the centuries-old sports for which the region is known.

Naadam, which means entertainment or games in Mongolian, is held every July and August when the livestock are fat and strong.

Events include what are known as the "three games of men" - Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery.

The contests and entertainment are staged during midsummer to celebrate harvest.

In August, the region is planning its larger-scale Naadam fairs. On August 5, there will be a cultural festival in Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mogolia.

And on August 9, 5,000 athletes will take part in a Naadam Fair in Xinlinhot.
