A romantic moment involving a ring-bearing drone at a Beijing university didn't quite take off as planned when campus security grounded the craft, media reported Saturday.
Photos of the whirling affair on Sina Weibo showed a student surnamed Liu steering the quad-rotor drone to his waiting sweetheart outside Tsinghua University.
However, campus security soon arrived and put an end to the aerial display of affection, posted Liu's schoolmate surnamed Zhang.
Wang Shiming, deputy director of the university's security department, defended the action, saying that drones cannot be flown in Beijing without official authorization.
"If they think security was responsible for breaking the drone, they can file a complaint," Wang added.
Yang Yang, an aerospace expert, told media there's no specific city regulation applying to quad-rotor drones.
"The use of drones in non-controlled areas does not need approval," Yang said. "But if the school forbids them, regulations should be followed."
