The driver of a BMW sedan which crashed into a Mazda sedan and fled the scene in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province on Saturday was cleared of driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, local police announced.
The BMW driver, identified as 35-year-old construction businessman Wang Jijin, sped through a red light in Nanjing's Qinhuai district on Saturday afternoon, hitting a Mazda sedan, a bus and a taxi.
Two people in the Mazda were killed on the spot while the taxi driver was injured, according to a police statement.
Surveillance footage showed that the impact shattered the Mazda sedan.
Wang fled the scene but was arrested by local police and has been detained for suspected traffic offenses, while the cause of the accident is still under investigation, read the statement.
Speculation quickly spread that Wang was either under the influence of liquor or drugs while driving as white powder was reportedly found in his vehicle. Rumors also said that Wang does not have a driver's license.
Local police have denied all rumors, saying that no drugs were found and that they have confirmed Wang's identity. He also has a valid driver's license, police said.
The white powder was corn flour, local newspaper Modern Express reported.
The BMW sedan was a debt bondage paid by a man surnamed Xu in 2014, according to Wang's wife, police said.
