The Chinese government's 37 million U.S. dollars loan to Ghana for a distance learning program has boosted the distance learning infrastructure project in the country, Minister of Education Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang said on Tuesday.

According to her, the completed the ICT Distance Education (ICDE) project under the University of Ghana was completed last year.

The minister disclosed this when she took her turn at the government's regular Meet-The-Press program to throw more light on developments under the education ministry.

The project is part of the broad program by government to create educational opportunities in equal manner through distance learning.

"The project created modern facilities at each of the regional centers of ICDE by building a minimum of a 50-seat computer laboratory, a video conference center connected to Data Centre at the Legon Campus over the Vodafone National Fiber Backbone," Opoku- Agyemang added.

With the distance learning program, students across the country can enjoy the same quality level of instruction being offered by the same teachers at the center in real time.

It is part of the government's program to bridge the gap in the quality of education in rural and urban areas.

China's continued support for Ghana's development has been spreading from the traditional economic sectors to other sectors such as health service delivery, education, arts and culture and even the military.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana teaches the Chinese language to Ghanaians from basic school to tertiary levels.
