A Chinese envoy to the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday applauded the role played by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in the areas of population and development.

The Chinese delegation appreciates the leading role of the UNFPA over the past years in the fields of population and development, said Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, at a conference on the UNFPA Executive Director's Annual Report.

"We hope that ... the UNFPA will continue to respect the real needs and priorities of program countries ... and effectively help them achieve sustainable economic and social development," he told the 2015 Annual Session of the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme, the UNFPA and the UN Office for Project Services.

Meanwhile, the Chinese delegation expressed pleasure in seeing that in 2014 the UNFPA's core resources registered an increase.

"We encourage the UNFPA to further explore new funding channels and enhance partnership building. At the same time, we call upon traditional donors to truly honor their ODA (official development assistance) commitments and contribute more to core resources," Wang said.

At the UN Development Summit to be held in September, the Post-2015 Development Agenda will be adopted, which will articulate the new objectives of and a new vision for international development cooperation, he said.

"It is our hope that the UNFPA will fully implement the Post-2015 Development Agenda, remain concentrated on the priorities in the Strategic Plan, spare no effort in facilitating poverty eradication and sustainable development of the developing countries and keep improving the effectiveness and efficiency of country-specific programs," Wang said.

Guided by the 1994 Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, the UNFPA partners with governments, civil society and other agencies, and works in more than 150 countries and territories.

Its mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
