Shanghai police announced on Wednesday that they have captured 26 suspects this year who fled overseas for economic crimes and corruption.

The suspects were found in 17 countries and regions. Some have been overseas for more than 20 years, according to the police.

The fugitives all had new identities overseas but were still caught by police with new technology, said Xu Changhua, head of the economic crime investigation department with the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

The suspects included a woman who fled to Japan 21 years ago. She defrauded 365,000 yuan (59,641 U.S. dollars) in loans from a company in 1994, according to the police.

They also included a company chairman suspected of embezzlement in 1997 who caused an economic loss of 90 million yuan to a securities company.

Shanghai police's crackdown on overseas fugitives is part of the "Fox Hunt 2015" that began in April and targets economic crime suspects.
