Rainstorms that have battered large parts of south China since May 4 have broken a 40-year rainfall record.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) said average rainfall in south China was 199.9 millimeters, 74 percent higher than normal.

The center forecast that the downpour will continue through next week.

Gales and thunderstorms will hit Guangdong Province until Sunday. Guizhou Province and the regions along the Yangtze River will see storms from May 26 to 28, the center said.

The NMC issued a yellow alert on Friday evening, warning of heavy rain and floods.

China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
