China will crack down on individuals and companies bribing officials, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said on Wednesday.

In a meeting presided over by Procurator-General Cao Jianming in recent days, the SPP urged procuratorates to apply severe punishments for bribery.

The SPP also called for more efforts to recover illegal gains from bribery, a move it believes will act as a stronger deterrent, and to pursue fugitives in bribery cases.
