The Water Splashing Festival in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan falls during the New Year celebrations on the Dai Calendar.
In Yunnan and some southeast Asian countries people splash one another with water as part of the cleansing ritual to welcome the new year.
The water carnival in Mangshi, capital city of Dehong Prefecture began on April 12th this year. On the first day of the festival, Dai people race dragon boats and light up bamboo fireworks, wishing for good luck. On the second day, Dai people get together to dance, and pour water on others to help remove bad luck for each other, and bring out happiness.
