A television image shows a man, dressed indark clothes, narrowly avoiding speedingrace cars during a free practice yesterday atthe Shanghai International Circuit.

An intruder rushed across the track during the second practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday before being taken away by security.

The man scaled a 10-foot fence separating the grandstand from the track, dashed across the starting grid and then leapt over the pit wall and through a gap in the fence toward pit road.

He barely made it across the track in between cars that were racing down the main straight at top speed.

Organizers said that the overzealous racing fan aimed at the Ferrari team. He waved his ticket while running, shouting "I want a racing car for I have the ticket."

Onlookers recalled the man did not look like being drunk, but his craziness stunned many people on hand, as Nico Hulkenberg's Force India car was speeding up towards the starting grid in 300 k/h at the moment.

A spokesman for FIA, the sport's governing body, said the man was holding a grandstand ticket in his hand and wanted to "try the cars."

FIA said it was investigating the incident, which did not cause a delay to the practice session.
