Chinese authorities on Thursday publicized cases showing their success in cracking down on online pornography.
Leading gateway website Netease was suspended for one month and its management fined 856,228.8 yuan (139,592 U.S. dollars) for providing pornographic reading material, the National Anti-Pornography and Anti-Illegal Publications Office said in a statement.
According to the statement, four suspects were also detained by police in January in Zhejiang Province for selling pornographic videos on popular messaging application WeChat, with their illegal earnings reaching about 200,000 yuan. The case has been transferred to judicial organs.
Another case saw eight suspects, including the founder of two porn websites with more than 260,000 registered users, seized in Zibo City of Shandong Province.
The founder, surnamed Zhou, allegedly gained more than 20 million yuan from the websites which carried 210,000 videos. Five of the eight involved have been transferred to prosecutors.
The office is launching a fresh campaign targeting search engines, gateway and video websites spreading pornography particularly via pop-ups and cloud storage, according to the statement.
The anti-porn office also said three suspects with Internet giant Sina.com were officially charged in February and March, respectively, with posting articles and videos that contained lewd and pornographic content on the website.
