The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday warned South Korea not to "toe US policy," urging Seoul to work with Pyongyang for independent reunification.

The South Korean authorities "will not be able to escape the most miserable end if they persistently join the US moves for a war of aggression aimed to disturb peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," the official KCNA news agency quoted a spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea as saying.

The spokesman said in a statement that the DPRK has bolstered its military might in every way to fend against war of aggression by the United States.

The DPRK's "access to smaller, precision and diversified nuclear strike means was designed to conclude the final battle with the US in its mainland," said the statement.

Should Seoul join Washington in the aggression of the DPRK, it would also be the target of Pyongyang's retaliatory strikes, the statement said.

South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol told a press briefing Monday that the government will sternly deal with DPRK provocations while closely monitoring changes in the DPRK's attitude and situations.

His comments came a day after the DPRK fired five short-range projectiles, presumed to be tactical missiles, into east waters. The projectiles were launched from the Wonsan area in east DPRK into a northeasterly direction.
