The UN development system should continue to support the momentum of South-South cooperation and explore new methods for carrying it forward, a Chinese envoy said Monday.

Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the appeal at a meeting about the work of the UN Development Program (UNDP).

"The Chinese delegation encourages the UNDP to make full use of its coordinating position within the UN development system and support South-South cooperation in areas of policy and resources," said Wang.

He noted that China supports the UNDP's efforts in implementing the 2014-17 Strategic Plan and helping developing countries eliminate poverty and achieve comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development guided by the post-2015 development agenda.

The Chinese government has all along attached great importance to cooperation with the UNDP and acknowledges positively its contribution to promoting economic and social development in China, he added.

The UNDP in general works to reduce poverty and inequalities and exclusion in more than 170 countries and territories.

Through 2015, when UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are going to expire, the UNDP claims that it will continue to push to achieve the MDGs and to strengthen post-2015 frameworks for development and climate change.
