Chinese nuclear physicist Yu Min won China's top science and technology accolade on Friday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping presented the award to Yu, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at a high-profile annual ceremony held to honor distinguished scientists and research achievements.

Yu, born in north China's Tianjin in 1926, was behind China's first successful hydrogen bomb test during the Cold War era, miniaturization of nuclear weapons, technological breakthroughs in the neutron bomb, and filled the nation's void in the theory of atomic nucleus.

China's first hydrogen bomb was detonated on June 17, 1967, 32 months after the country's first atomic bomb test. It took the United States seven years and three months to develop a hydrogen bomb after its first atomic bomb test.
