Andrew's Egg Tarts

One of the must-eat foods when visiting Macao is the Portuguese egg tart.

In a nice twist, the creator of these custard tarts is not a baker from Portugal but an English pharmacist named Andrew Stow. Now Andrew's Egg Tart has become one of Macao's trademark treats.

Generally acknowledged as the inventor of the Portuguese egg tarts, there is no doubting the quality of the egg tarts at Andrew's. Andrew's egg tarts mix the best of the original Portuguese Pasteis de Nata with some classic English touches.

In 1990, Stow experimented and came up with this specialty of Portuguese egg tarts, which quickly became synonymous with Macao. Andrew's franchising of his egg tart in 1997 led to Asia's "egg tart frenzy."

In 2006, Stow died from an asthma attack. But his legacy lives on: Andrew's Egg Tart now has nine chain stores in Macao, selling some 12,000 delicious egg tarts every day.
