Lebanon's Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) hailed Wednesday China's anti-corruption campaign, saying it is "important for enhancing the status of the Chinese economy in the world."

Rami Rayess, media chief of the PSP and editor in-chief of the party's "anbaaonline" website, told Xinhua in an interview that he considered China's anti-corruption campaign "crucial" as the communist party of China (CPC) has been playing a leading role in modernizing the country so as to turn China into a great and competitive power among the world economies.

The CPC has about 86 million members and it is normal that corruption could be observed, he said.

"But I believe that the success of the anti-corruption campaign are going to make great positive reflects on the domestic scene," he added.

Rayess, also PSP spokesperson, said the results of the campaign would be in the interest of the Chinese economy.

"Because as transparency is enhanced and the rule of law prevails, the economic measures would be able to expand and this would be reflected in the future by more economic successes for the Chinese economy," he said.

The PSP official also hoped that this campaign could "reach its goals and not be limited to enhancing the culture of anti-corruption, but to be adopted as a sustainable policy."

He also said the campaign intersects with the reform policy the PSP is promoting in Lebanon through the posts it holds in the government.

Currently, Lebanon's public health minister and agriculture minister are PSP members.

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour launched recently a national campaign, which is titled "the integrity of public health and food security."

It will probe slaughterhouses, dairy factories and supermarkets throughout Lebanon, and during the inspection, some of the big brand names were closed because they failed to follow the ministry standards.

"China is considered since long time ago a leading and essential player on the International scene, and the prosperity and progress that the Chinese economy has achieved and greatly boosted the status of China," the official said.

Rayess said China's pattern to grow its economy has presented a model to achieve the kind of progress and success no other socialist countries have ever accomplished.

He considered that it also reflects "how China has developed the kind of awareness that enabled the leadership to not only deal with all of the economic and social challenges presented by the huge Chinese population, but also address them with all the needed sense of responsibility and firmness."

He also said the campaign can also promote a culture of anti-corruption that is badly needed in most of the world countries, where corruption is widespread with alarming levels.

Rayess added that it would be reflected positively on the development of communities affected by poverty generally associated with corruption.

Speaking about possible cooperation between Lebanon and China in the field of anti-corruption, Rayess welcomed "the possibility," saying such cooperation would certainly bring benefits to Lebanon.
