A British man has been reunited with his passport and cash, after he left his jacket in a city taxi.

Businessman Charles John McGirr picked up his belongings from Gaojing police station in Baoshan District yesterday and met cabbie Liu Jun who found and handed in his property.

McGirr forgot his jacket on cabbie Liu Jun's car on Sunday morning when making a trip with two friends from Shanghai Baolong Hotel to the Shanghai JC Mandarin Hotel.

Yesterday, McGirr hugged Liu, gave him a reward and praised him for his honesty.

"He's a respectable and very honest driver," said McGirr, who comes from Northern Ireland.

Liu said he was pleased that his fare had got his passport and money back.

"I'm very relieved that my passenger got his property back," said Liu.

Police said McGirr arrived at Pudong International Airport, but was taken to the wrong hotel by another cabbie and overcharged.

When he realized that he was in the wrong place, he and his party took Liu's cab to the JC Mandarin on Nanjing Road W.

After finding McGirr's property, Liu drove back to both hotels to look for him, but failed.

He handed in the jacket to Shanghai Dazhong Taxi Co, which turned to police for help.

Emergency contact

According to Jiefang Daily, an emergency contact number was found inside the passport by a reporter and the UK contact informed that the passport had been found.

McGirr said he was about to go to the British Consulate General in Shanghai to apply for a new passport yesterday before being informed that his belongings had been found.

He went to Gaojing police station where he met cabbie Liu and collected his passport, jacket and 2,780 UK pounds (US$4,360).

Dazhong said Liu will be rewarded and named a model worker by the company.

"I hope what I did can leave the foreign tourist with a good impression of Shanghai's taxi industry," Liu said.
