Southwest China's Chongqing University has recently received a 300-million-yuan donation from alum Tang Lixin. The sum is now the single highest alumni donation in China, the Beijing Times reported on Friday.

Tang Lixin, who entered Chongqing University in 1981, has announced to donate 300 million yuan to his alma mater to construct a new academic building.

The announcement comes as Chongqing University celebrates its 85th anniversary.

According to an employee at Chongqing University, Tang performed well academically in college. After graduation, Tang became a successful business owner.

Since 2009, Tang has launched several scholarships and funds to support students with financial difficulties as well as to inspire innovation, overseas exchange and scientific research. So far, his donation has amounted to 360 million yuan.

This could be part of a new trend in China: more and more alumni have donated to their respective alma maters.

A list released by the Chinese Alumni Network reveals that at least 16 Chinese universities have each received donations worth over 100 million yuan, and the total amount of alumni donations to Chinese universities has approached 10 billion yuan.
