A man in northwest China's Shaanxi Province has claimed police used torture to extract a confession of drugs use from him.

Police detained Liu Juyou, a villager from Wuqi county, Yan'an City, on Sept. 3 after a tip-off that Liu had stolen crude oil and took drugs, said the Yan'an public security bureau on its Sina Weibo microblog.

Liu was put in detention for 15 days after he tested positive for drugs in a urine test and admitted to taking drugs. Days into the detention, Liu's aunt suggested that the positive result might be a result of a snack.

An investigation showed that the snack was adulterated with opium poppy and the snack-shop owner was then put in detention for ten days.

Police authorities promised to work with other agencies to improve supervision of food safety and food crimes.
