Beijing to reduce grain production

In order to protect Beijing's underground water resources, grain production in Beijing will be gradually reduced, reported the Beijing Youth Daily.

The government has declared Huairou, Pinggu, Shunyi, Daxing and Tongzhou districts as water source protection zones. The underground water in these districts is steadily decreasing by one meter every year.

Zhang Hongtu, a city agricultural committee member, stated that Beijing produces 1 out of every 7.5 kilograms of grains consumed each year. In the future, to protect water resources, wheat production will be gradually reduced by half.
