A 19-year-old student has been held after his grandfather was fatally stabbed and his mother seriously injured during a family dispute, police in Shanghai's Hongkou district said yesterday.

The mother, who suffered wounds to her head, neck, arm and abdomen, is being treated in hospital following the incident at just before 6:30pm on Tuesday.

Her son, surnamed Bian, lived with his parents and grandfather in an apartment on Tongxin Road.

When police arrived at the apartment, they found Bian's paternal grandfather dead and his mother bleeding heavily.

Bian was held and his mother taken to the Shanghai No. 411 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army.

When Shanghai Daily reached the apartment where the incident occurred it was cordoned off with two officers on guard outside. They refused to comment on the incident.

A next-door neighbor told how he heard weak cries for help when he was about to take the elevator at 4pm on Tuesday. As it sounded like a faint murmur he thought it was someone joking and didn't do anything.

But when he came back two hours later, the neighbor heard the cries again and realized something was wrong.

In the same time, Bian's father returned home from work and discovered the shocking scene.

Downstairs neighbors said they heard strange noises coming from the flat at around 3pm and lasting for nearly an hour.

Some witnesses said Bian was smiling when he was taken out of the residential building by police and questioned whether he had mental health issues.

A neighborhood committee official told Shanghai Daily that relatives of Bian he'd met after the incident all described him as "a good boy."
