Medical experts from China, Boston treat boy, 8

An 11-year-old boy with a rare genetic disorder received medical treatment from experts from both Shanghai and Boston on Monday, in the first international cooperation by a new medical platform in Shanghai.

The boy from Shanghai was diagnosed when a baby with cri du chat syndrome, a rare genetic disorder due to a missing part of chromosome 5. He cannot utter sentences or express feelings, and sometimes behaves aggressively, according to a report from paper.com on Tuesday.

His parents took him to the Shanghai International Medical Center on Monday for the joint consultation. It was the first international cooperation in medical treatment there since the center opened about two months ago.

The boy was given primary intervention and drug treatment and has shown some improvement.

Meng Yuan, the medical director of the center, said based on the needs of patients, the center will expand its international cooperation in medical consultations in the future, inviting experts from different countries to help patients in China.
