High school students in love are being told to cool it in Henan province after their high school tweaked its ban on teenage romance, media reported on Monday.

Yanshi High School officials announced the school had changed its policy on PDAs (public displays of affection) to "students will be expelled if they engage in a relationship and become a bad influence on others."

The policy had been reworded from the milder "holding hands."

The euphemism had been used due to a "lack of an appropriate word," said Yanshi High School Principal Ji Anle.

A school official denied the policy change was spurred by the bad academic performance of the school's seniors class in this year's national college entrance examinations.

Although well-received among parents, students showed no love for the policy.

"We're people too, not cold-hearted studying machines," wrote a Yanshi High School student in an online forum. "We also have passions and desires."
