A woman was sentenced to a year in prison for the manslaughter of an elderly man who died of a heart attack following a heated argument in the street.

The incident happened when the woman, Tian Ling, was walking along Jinghua Road in Qingpu District on April 19, the Qingpu District People's Court heard.

She and her friends had been drinking and were zigzagging along the road when a moped, ridden by a man surnamed Wang, came toward them.

Septuagenarian Wang, who had a history of heart disease, and his wife Li, who was riding pillion, were on their way to hospital.

After Wang honked his horn at Tian, the pair began arguing. Tian became irate and slapped Li in the face, after which Wang pushed Tian to the ground.

A scuffle broke out and Tian began verbally abusing Wang for "beating up a woman," the court heard.

Soon after, Li's sister arrived and told Tian about Wang's weak heart. Tian, however, took no notice and continued to abuse Wang, demanding he apologize.

As the conflict escalated, Wang turned pale and collapsed, the court heard.

He was rushed to hospital but died soon after as the result of a heart attack.
