An explosion in a residential building in north China's Shanxi province on Sunday has killed seven people and injured four others, local authorities said.

The explosion happened at an apartment in the Jingshan Garden Residential Compound of Changzhi city around 1:30 am, according to the municipal government's information office.

Initial investigations showed the tragedy was caused by natural gas explosion. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

An emergency rescue team has been established by the local government.
