As temperatures hit the mid-30s, Shanghai hospitals have been reporting cases of heatstroke.

At Shanghai East Hospital alone, there have been 40 cases in the past few weeks.

Older people show symptoms such as fever, a rise in blood sugar or an aggravation of existing conditions, while in younger patients, dizziness, respiratory infection and acute gastroenteritis are typical symptoms, said Bai Jianwen, director of the hospital's emergency department.

Doctors have also reminded exercise fans to avoid outdoor activities when temperatures exceed 32 degrees and humidity is at 60 percent.
