Some swimmers developed itchy red spots on their skin after swimming in the waters of Shichanghai. Doctors have identified the disease as "papular urticaria", the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Papular urticaria is most common in the summer months and can be caused by insect bites and allergic reaction to plants. The disease can be easily cured but long-term exposure to the water can cause the illness to spread and lead to other skin diseases.

Swimming in the waters of Shichahai has become somewhat of a local tradition. But a Houhai neighborhood committee member, surnamed Wang, said swimming is prohibited in the lake, urging locals not to swim in the dangerous waters.
