A court in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province ordered a bus driver and ticket taker to pay 50,000 yuan ($8,005) in compensation for not taking proper action when an elderly man fell ill and died on a city bus.
The 66-year-old man surnamed Huang died of kidney failure, for which he was en route to seek treatment on July 1, local media reported Wednesday.
"It was a very hot day, but the driver refused to turn on the air conditioner," said a witness on the bus, "I heard the old man say he couldn't stand the heat anymore."
Surveillance video revealed Huang twice hitting his head on a handrail from sudden stops made by the driver.
Huang lost consciousness a few minutes later and began to foam at the mouth. The driver stopped and the ticket taker called an ambulance.
Huang was declared dead at the hospital. Family members filed a law suit against the bus company for negligence and demanded 310,000 yuan in compensation.
A city court ruled the bus company at fault for failing to take appropriate actions.
