While certainly not the most reasonably priced restaurant/bar in Shanghai, most people are drawn to this location for its rich history, lavish classical decor and abundance of old Shanghai glamour.

During its 80-odd-year history, the three-story Spanish-style villa has served as the consulate of the former Soviet Union, Vietnam and the UK. Its consular duties came to an end though in 2001, when the building's current owner renovated it into a clubhouse.

The instant you step in, you feel transported back to the Shanghai of the 1930s thanks to the mix of Chinese and Western-style furnishings, crystal chandeliers, leather sofas, wooden electric fans and arched windows.

The restaurant's outdoor section has the same ambience as its interior. One can sit on retro metal chairs or mahogany stools in the delicate garden and sip wine surrounded by magnolia trees, stone Buddha statues, Chinese lanterns and a goldfish pond. Cocktails cost 78 to 88 yuan, plus a 15 percent service fee.
