A newlywed man in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province attempted suicide Saturday night over concerns he would not make ends meet after his construction site shut down due to the summer heat.

Zhou Ping, 29, is in stable condition at a local hospital after his wife, Xue Juan (both pseudonyms), found him with slit wrists in their apartment.

Xue called police on Saturday after receiving a call from Zhou, in which he said that he "wanted a divorce" and "did not want to live anymore."

Xue rushed home to find Zhou on their bed with a pool of his blood underneath.

Zhou and Xue were married in May. Zhou worked at a construction site in Zhenjiang while his wife sold clothing in nearby Jurong county.

Police said Zhou's employers stopped all work at the site due to the recent rains and intense heat.

Worried over his lost income, Zhou desperately searched for extra work but was unsuccessful.

A psychologist said Zhou's suicide attempt was driven by an "emotional disorder" and "anxiety from the heat."
