Many of Shanghai's public buses have been outfitted to improve their safety via automatic fire-extinguishing equipment and extra surveillance cameras.

Sensors are placed near the engine, and once the temperature is detected to be over 110 degrees Celsius, the equipment will spray carbon dioxide foam onto the engine.

"The equipment can prevent fire accidents caused by oil leakage or aging wires, and win time for passengers to escape," said Yang Yong, spokesman for Pudong Yanggao Bus Co.

A new emergency button has been added to the outside of the back door of 138 buses, covering 10 bus routes in Pudong.

"The doors can be opened from outside when encountering an emergency," Yang said. Currently, most emergency buttons are atop the bus doors inside the carriage. A driver can also activate the buttons by a switch placed near the driver's seat.

Some bus routes operating in Puxi have also upgraded their vehicles. The No. 76 buses have six surveillance cameras, so as to cover all corners inside the carriage.

Shanghai Bashi Electric Bus Co. has doubled the number of emergency hammers on over 300 of its buses. According to the company, the buses, covering 12 routes, now have seven to eight emergency hammers placed at two sides of the carriage. There used to be only three to four.

Passengers with large luggage or carrying suspicious items will be required to undergo security checks.
