Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Party on Monday announced that it will hold its plenary congress on Sept 14 in the southern city of Chiayi.

Su Jun-pin, the KMT's organizational head, said that the party hopes to use the opportunity to drum up support for its nominees for the Nov. 29 elections.

On Nov 29 of this year, city mayors, including the mayors of Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, and county and village magistrates on the island will be elected. Delegates from ethnic minority areas will also be elected then.

It is estimated that more than 20,000 people have registered to run for election.

The KMT's plenary congress, which was previously held every two years, has become an annual event following a party charter amendment adopted in November last year.
