Chinese president Xi Jinping addressed the joint opening ceremony of the Sixth Round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the Fifth Round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange. His speech shows China's confidence in the continued development of China-US relations. "I always maintain that the Pacific Ocean is big enough to accommodate both the United States and China," Xi said in the speech.

Xi won approval from both Chinese and foreign media with a speech which provided guidance on the development of the current China-US relations, and called on both sides to stick to cooperation and avoid confrontation, to the benefit of both countries and to the world as a whole.

Over the past 35 years China-US relations have become deeply intertwined. They have witnessed historical development through highs and lows. Today, China and the United States are joining together in an effort to promote their new model major-country relationship.

China and the United States have differences in many aspects, such as the social system, developmental stage, and historical and cultural traditions. They hold different opinions on international trade and political issues. Above all, both sides should work sincerely with each other to solve any problems, strengthen mutual trust, maintain the right track, show mutual respect, expand shared interests while reducing the differences between them, strengthen cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefits, and develop their friendship with a special focus on people-to-people exchanges.

Today at the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue, China and the United States are not only exchanging opinions at the macro level, but also starting to discuss problems concerning the interests of both nations and seeking common interests at the technological level. Both nations should join their efforts to find new ways to promote China-US relations instead of harming them. Bilateral cooperation has not only benefited both peoples, but also promoted peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
