Guo Meimei, the woman whose online flaunting of her luxurious lifestyle led to a notorious corruption scandal at the Red Cross Society of China, was detained on Wednesday in Beijing for participating in online World Cup gambling, Beijing police confirmed Thursday.

Police said they have caught eight members of a gambling group, and that Guo was a client. Guo had admitted to her gambling activities, police said.

In 2011, Guo posted pictures of her driving a Maserati on Sina Weibo and identified herself as the general manager of a company called Red Cross Commerce, prompting an online manhunt by netizens furious at the apparent misuse of funds originally earmarked for charity.
