A woman unable to cope with her husband rejecting her invitation to a group square dance attempted to kill herself with poison, media in Zhejiang province reported Monday.

The 53-year-old woman, surnamed Rao, underwent an hour of emergency treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University after she chased insect poison with a bottle of liquor on July 4, said the report.

Her husband, surnamed Jiang, called rescuers after finding Rao lying on the floor in their Wenzhou home, foaming at the mouth.

Police said Rao had called her daughter earlier that evening, saying she "doesn't want to live." Subsequent calls from the daughter to Rao went unanswered.

Jiang said he supports his wife's hobby but never expected her to react so drastically.

Public square dancing, or Guangchangwu, is a form of group exercise popular among the middle-aged and elderly.
