Li Dongsheng, former Vice Minister of Public Security has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) for "serious disciplinary violations."

The decision was made by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and approved by the CPC Central Committee, the CCDI announced on Monday.

The decision has been reviewed at a CPC Central Committee Political Bureau meeting and will be further confirmed at a CPC Central Committee plenary meeting, according to a CCDI statement.

A CCDI investigation into Li's case found that he took advantage of his position to seek benefits for others and extorted and received "a huge amount" of bribes, it said.

Moreover, the State Council has approved a decision by the Ministry of Supervision to punish Li by dismissing him from his public office.

Li's suspected crimes will be transferred to judicial authorities, the statement added.

Li was a former member of the 18th CPC Central Committee and former deputy head of a central leading group which oversees the cult prevention campaign.
