June 26 marks the 27th International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. With 170 countries and regions reportedly fighting international drug trafficking, China is not ignoring its own challenges at home.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, the country has over 2.5 million registered drug abusers. The ministry says more young people are experimenting with synthetic drugs or so-called 'club drugs' such as like ecstasy. It says three quarters of the club drug users are young people under 35 years old.

The ministry's statistics show the illegal drug problem is getting worse. Since June last year, the country has investigated over 500 drug trafficking cases, an increase of more than 30 percent from the year before.
