Local police in Beijing have arrested a woman suspected of killing her mother by forcing her to drink mercury in front of her 7-year-old daughter and then hiding the corpse in their apartment for two months.
The 36-year-old suspect surnamed Yang admitted to police that she killed her 60-year-old mother over money.
"I did not have a job or money. I just wanted money from her but she refused," said Yang.
No official charges have been pressed against Yang.
Police found the decomposing corpse in a locked bedroom after a neighbor reported a pungent smell coming from Yang's apartment on April 9.
The body was under a quilt with her arms and feet bound in adhesive tape bearing Yang's fingerprints.
Police targeted Yang after finding a letter from the victim accusing her of not supporting her and repeatedly scrounging off her savings.
Yang later admitted she had put mercury from a thermometer in a glass of water and forced her mother to drink it.
Her 7-year-old daughter witnessed the act and was scared to tears, said Yang.
Yang finally stowed the corpse in a bedroom and continued to live in the apartment with her daughter for two months before the stench drove them out.
