Police in Linzhou, Henan province caught a man who announced he was seeking to swap his baby boy for a girl on a flyer in a hospital bathroom.

Officers delivered a stern warning to the man surnamed Liu and his family before releasing him on Tuesday.

Liu,34, told police that he and his wife, already the parents of an 11-year-old son, wanted to have a girl. He explained that his wife, surnamed Zhu, had an abortion after an ultrasound revealed they would have a second boy.

After becoming pregnant again with a third son, Zhu decided to keep him.

With the baby's due date closely approaching, Liu and his family decided to exchange their unborn son for a girl.

Liu then posted the incriminating ad in a local hospital bathroom, complete with his contact number.

A reporter contacted Lin and posed as someone interested in the baby exchange.

Liu proposed to have their children delivered at the same hospital in order to make the switch. He also requested that no money be exchanged and that all contact be severed after the deal.

The reporter later called the police.

Liu said they were unaware their behavior was illegal and promised to raise their baby regardless of gender.
