Many large chain drug stores in Beijing are shutting down because of increasing rent, fewer customers and diminishing profit caused by new regulations, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.
According to the Beijing Food and Drug Administration, a new rule requires a licensed pharmacist at each drug store. Additionally, new rules ban drug stores from selling daily necessities such as shampoo and cosmetics.
Golden Elephant Pharmacy closed 21 stores last year in Beijing, and Yibao Quanxin Pharmacy closed 24 of its 50 stores over the last three years.
