Parents were lined up outside the primary schools at 4 am for the qualification assessment of kindergarten graduates entering elementary school on Saturday. Over 1.6 million kindergarten graduates in Beijing are involved in the enrollment procedure, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Beijing Municipal Commission of Education has previously announced rules forbidding primary schools from using methods including interviews and examinations to test students. This year under the new regulations, students will only be required to have a face-to-face meeting with their teachers. For top schools, including the Shijia Primary School in Dongcheng district, the most important qualification for students is a verification that their father or mother's hukou (household registration) is in the school's district.
